The young girl gave a soft sigh as she closed over the huge, heavy tome. The book she had been flicking through was of no use to her at all. The books on the chair next to her – and there were quite a few there – were of no use to her either. None of them had anything even remotely near what she was trying to look up.
”Stupid evil villains…” she muttered softly. So, far Callie Barton had had no luck in finding anything about the latest evil-doer who had shown up. Normally, this was to be expected – villains of this day and age couldn’t be found in old library textbooks. They’d be found on the news, in magazines… Maybe kid’s books, she supposed, but not in these leather-bound worlds. However, the newcomer claimed to be a great leader from the past, and his name had rung a bell with several members of S.H.I.E.L.D., though nothing had come up on the database.
After a while, the villain had just… disappeared. Done nothing much and then gone away. No one seemed to think he was too much of a threat and so they just forgot about him. Until Callie had wandered in on Monday after school was over and asked for a job to do – something that did not involve following other agents around and acting as a servant. So, she had landed a useless researching job that just wasn’t paying up. The guy had probably been lying. He hadn’t given anyone his name, only showed them several magical fireworks and then an ugly blue demon face instead of his real face.
Dude could have been anyone.
Pushing the book in front of her away, she sighed, folded her arms and placed them on the table, then rested her chin on top of her folded arms. She couldn’t just go back with nothing, could she? Her superiors probably knew that nothing would turn up but she wanted to be helpful in some way. Callie wasn’t allowed to do anything and that just wasn’t fair at all. Sure, she got to take part in training sessions and a few meetings – but the meetings she was allowed to attend were usually only ones about how to improve efficiency and that kind of stuff. Nothing interesting. She wasn’t even allowed out on missions, and surely by this point she had proved that she could handle herself. She wasn’t exactly going to be a damsel in distress!
Callie’s eyes flickered back and forth around the library. From where she was sitting in a quiet corner in the far end of the library she couldn’t make out much. Just the winding set of stairs that led up to the next floor, and a lot of bookshelves. Of course. There weren’t many people about to study so pretty soon, Callie gave up watching as a lost cause as well.
Groaning, she tilted her head so that she was now looking at the floor her forehead resting on the table. She was getting pretty annoyed that all she got to do was be research gal. She could do so much more. What, were they worried she was going to get hurt? She could take care of herself. And the villains lately? They were pathetic.
”It’s like they’ve learnt from Evil for Dummies or something.” she said outloud, without thinking.
