Twisting around in her spin chair, Kaylee awaited the bell that signalled the first lesson of the day. In fact, this lesson was even more than just the first class of the day, it was the first class of the new semester. All in all it would be a slow start – just a quick introduction to topics that would be developed on throughout the year, and a chance for students to ask any questions. And if she was in a particularly good mood the questions wouldn’t just have to be about her class in particular, and could even extend to such dreaded topics as her mutant powers developing and life at Xaviers.
She gave a soft yawn and stopped spinning in the chair to look at the computer. One hand tapped away restlessly on her desk as she sent out telepathic messages to the computer to bring up a list of the students she was expecting. A few of them had been around for a while – Megan had always been at the school of course, and then there was Ray who up until recently had appeared spontaneously when the feeling had struck her father to bring her by, which hadn’t been that often. Then there was a small group of students who had only recently come by the school – a couple of them she hadn’t even spoken to before.
Great, I’ll have to be good first impression Kaylee today she thought quietly to herself as she closed down the programme and brought up the notepad to write down a few quick memos.
Number one full stop, she dictated in her head, being extremely clear. As the day went on she’d be able to skip some steps but she was tired and wanted to be clear with the computer as to what she wished it to do. Introduce myself and class, comma, try not to be too weird… full stop.
She ran a hand through her hair glancing about the empty classroom. There were several desks in the middle of the room, then on desks by the wall there were computers lined up – quite state of the art and Kaylee had ran through them before to make sure they were all working. Over the next few lessons she planned to have the students come up with a powerpoint detailing something about themselves – a hobby, interest, their powers… Anything like that. It was a simple task that could help her gauge how well they worked with computers. If things went well they’d then progress on to much more interesting technological things.
Oh, right. Kaylee blinked and then focused in one the screen again where her failed memo list was waiting to be finished. Uhm. Okay, number two. By this point she had noticed the time and gave up on the full instructions. Go through the kids, learn their names. This is a must. Must. Must. Number three… Make stuff up. Number four. Uh there is no number four… She groaned and leant back in her chair.
The first lesson of the semester was always tough. You couldn’t go straight into the nitty-gritty parts of the course, but then again you couldn’t just let the lesson go to waste. Hopefully the kids would be the good kind of students – meaning they’d listen, but not be hesitant to tell her something and ask questions. Or give input. It was always nice to have someone give new ideas. And kids always had the best ideas she had found – imagination was key thing, even in a situation where technology was the main domain.
Standing up, she moved away from her desk and opened the door to the classroom just as the bell rang. Smiling softly, she walked back over to her desk, sitting on it instead of going around to the back and dropping into her chair. Arms folded, she awaited the students that were about to come trailing in, a pleasant smile on her face.

The bell was an unwelcome intrusion into the lives of a few members of the GeNext group. A new day, new lessons…. Megan Summers yawned softly, and stretched her arms in the air. She was sitting comfortably on one of the sofas in the rec room. Well, half sitting on the sofa and half sitting on her boyfriend Oli. She leaned in to kiss his cheek as she untangled herself and stood up ignoring the catcalls from her other friends. Walking around the back of the sofa she whacked Rico on the head, saying, ”Well, duty calls. See you guys around.” She gave them a grin, watching as the others slowly got up from their position on the sofa or the ground and with looks of weary acceptance started to traipse towards their class.
Megan had taken the Technology class, and it was first year of taking it – she knew how to work computers and the like so it just didn’t seem as though it was something she needed. However her father had insisted on her having more than just a bit of basic knowledge, and then bam! here she was walking along the corridor to the computing labs. She yawned once more, already bored and class hadn’t even started. But she tried to shrug it off – after all, she liked Miss Harris. And god, it wasn’t her fault that Megan just wasn’t prepared for classes. However, she was slightly apprehensive about this one particularly class – mainly because it was one of the classes that were open to having students of any age of group in at the one time. She had heard Sarah talking about joining, and she wasn’t even old enough to be in a proper X-Group yet. Though Sarah was just like her mother and seemed to have an aptitude for computers and tech so… Perhaps that was justified.
Shaking her head slightly, she rounded a corner and walked into the first class on the right. ”Morning Miss Harris.” Megan gave a small nod and a smile as she moved to sit in a seat at the far end of the classroom. It wasn’t that she didn’t like Miss Harris enough to want to sit at the front, but she just didn’t want to be in that clear a view of everyone else. At the back there was a bit of freedom. At the front everyone could see her, and in some instances that just wasn’t so much fun.
Dropping her bag on the ground by her desk, she pulled out the chair behind it and sat down in it lightly. Crossing her legs she waited patiently for the appearance of anyone else.

The young girl laughed brightly, taking another sip of her orange juice. Little Sarah Pryde was sitting by one of the counters in the kitchen watching as her Uncle Bobby tried – and failed – to make the perfect pancake. It was funny, and she had to admit she was enjoying eating the rejects. She’d have to make sure not to let her mother find out however. Finishing off her orange juice, she swung her legs gently and glanced out one of the windows. It was such a nice morning – bright sun, pretty warm… The prefect day to go outside, and to play baseball! But what was she stuck doing? Work. School work. Ugh.
Her tilted up slightly to the ceiling as the bell broke out signalling class. She blinked then made a face at Bobby. ”Well, kiddo, guess that’s your cue to skedaddle. Don’t want to be late on your first day, do you?” Sarah rolled her eyes and sighed as she hopped off the high stool, ”Noooo…. Wouldn’t want that.” She moved around the counter and started heading towards the door, taking a look back to tell Bobby, ”Oh, you’re pancake is burning by the way. See ya later Bobby!” And to the frustrated cries of the icy mutant, Sarah bounded out the door and along a hallway to the main lobby area. Already kids were starting to move up the stairs and on the first floor hallway she could see unhappy and gruntled students milling about on their way to class.
Scrunching up her nose, she too started to climb the stairs. She wasn’t sure what to expect. It was her first day of proper lessons. Before she had only dropped in on classes every now and then, just checking in. But for the most part, as the youngest non-mutant, she had been educated just by her mother – not that this was a bad thing – with her twin brother Doug. She rubbed absently at her nose as she reached the first floor and began making her way to her first class. Technology. She was good with tech stuff – though it never really held her interest too much. Her real passion was sport – namely, baseball. But she was good around technology, and the class had seemed like a good option to go for.
Sarah made her way down the hallway to her classroom, idly wondering who else would be there. Unlike the maths, English and other subjects like them the technology class had kids from all ages. Which would be slightly strange – but it could also be fun. She hadn’t really taken the time to talk to many of the older students, so perhaps this was an opportunity to do so. And the teacher was pretty nice and bubbly. A good teacher could stop a class from becoming painful and dull – and torture.
She reached the classroom and took a small step inside, looking about. There were two other people in the room – Megan and Miss Harris. She smiled brightly at Megan who had taken a seat at the back then turned to Miss Harris. ”Morning Miss. How are you?” She moved to take a seat in the second row from the front – well there was only five rows altogether, not a big class at all. Sitting down she looked around the room with some interest – the class wasn’t a place she usually populated.
